- 6 hrs.
Rating
3
Technical Class Indicates the technicality of the terrain and the tyoe of rope work require.
1 -
Canyon Hiking Non-technical. No rope is required. See the route description for difficulties.
2 -
Basic Canyoneering Scrambling, easy climbing or downclimbing. A rope may be handy for handlines, belays, lowering packs and emergency use. Exit or retreat possible upcanyon without fixed ropes.
3 -
Intermediate Canyoneering Rappels or technical climbing and/or downclimbing. A rope is required for belays and single-pitch rappels. Retreat upcanyon would require fixing ropes.
4 -
Advanced Canyoneering Aid climbing, multi-pitch rappels and/or complex rope work (such as re-belays, tyrollean traverse, or guided rappels) may be required. Might also require difficult pothole escapes, serious squeezing, extensive high-risk downclimbing, or have difficult-to-establish natural anchors. Rappels longer than 200 feet will usually earn a canyon a Class 4 rating.
A
Water Rating indicates complications due to flowing or still water, under normal conditions.
A -
Normally dry or with very little water. Wading to waist deep at most.
B -
Water with no current or light current. Still pools. Falls are normally dry or running at a trickle. Swimming expected.
C -
Water with strong current. Waterfalls. Wet canyon rope techniques required.
II
Time or Grade indicates the length of the adventure.
I -
Short. A couple of hours.
II -
Requires about a half day.
III -
Normally requires most of a day.
IV -
Expected to take a long day. Get up early, bring a headlamp. Possible bivy.
V -
More than one day. Normally done in two days.
VI -
Two full days or more.
Additional Risk Rating indicates the presence of more risk factors than might be expected.
No Rating -
Normal risk factors are present on this adventure.
R -
One or more extraordinary risk factors exist that complicate the descent. Solid technical skills and sound judgment required. Not appropriate for beginners, even with competent leadership.
X -
Multiple risk factors exist that will complicate the descent. Errors in technique or judgment will likely result in serious injury or death. Descent should be attempted by expert canyoneers only. This is the least-well-established part of the rating system, and the most subjective. Use by beta-providers varies widely, to the point that this part of the rating means very little.

1. Approaches:
Snow Canyon Approach
Approach GPS: 37.193110, -113.648270
From the parking lot, head North on the Whiptail dirt trail for 0.6 miles. Leave the trail to the left and head up a sandy wash, passing the first larger gully on the left. Head up the second and more narrow gully. There is a small social trail that will become apparent near the base of the narrow gully. The trail will lead you to a small saddle that is North of the gully and usually has a cairn or two to mark the way. Scramble up and over the saddle, and down to the Pictograph Canyon bottom wash. From this point, work your way up Pictograph Canyon again passing the first gully to appear on your left, but then heading up the second and larger gully. There will be a subtle social trail that marks the way up this second gully. This second gully is known as the Tuacahn Chimney. The scramble up to the very top of the Tuacahn Chimney seems to be most easily done by keeping to the right side as you head up. At the top of the gully, there is a large cairn to let you know you made it. From this point begin route-finding your way to the first rappel in a northern direction keeping Pictograph Canyon to your right. Aim for the area of black rocks and then start parallelling Pictograph Canyon until you get to the head of the canyon. To reach the first rappel, head Northeast down a finger of rock. The first rappel will be anchored on the wall to your left once you go down the finger.
Parking:
Sand Dunes Parking (North)
GPS: 37.19311, -11364827
There is a larger parking lot North of the sand dunes along Snow Canyon Dr. There are restrooms at this parking lot too.

Waypoints:
Wash Entrance
GPS: 37.20210, -113.65064
At these coordinates, you will leave the main trail and head West following the sandy wash. Follow the sandy was for just a couple of minutes.
Short Gully
GPS: 37.20122, -113.65294
Head up the second gully that comes in on the left as you go up the wash. You will go up the gully for about 75 yards until you can scramble up to the small saddle on your right (North).
Tuacahn Chimney Gully
GPS: 37.20201, -113.65452
Once you are up and over the small saddle, work your way up Pictograph Canyon again passing the first gully to appear on your left, but then heading up the second and larger gully.
Black Rock Field
GPS: 37.20155, -113.65688
From the top of the Tuacahn Chimney gully look in a northern direction and aim for the area of black rocks. From there keep aiming in a northern direction for the head of Pictograph Canyon. The canyon will be on your right as you continue to the head of the canyon.
Tuacahn Theater Approach
Approach GPS: 37.190257, -113.657264
From the Tuacahn Amphitheater parking lot, pick up the trailhead at the junction of the parking lot and the road on the North side of the parking lot. Follow the trail for about 5 minutes. A large boulder immediately on the left side of the trail marks the point where you leave the main trail and follow a social trail on the East (right) side of the trail. Soon you will see three fingers of red rock to the North. Work your way towards those fingers and scramble up the middle finger. It is exposed on both sides but is not a difficult scramble. Just watch your footing. Once on top of the finger, aim for the obvious opening where you will scramble up boulders. After going through the boulder section, continue working your way up until you can begin heading North towards the head of Pictograph Canyon.

Snow Canyon Exit
Exit GPS: 37.20142, -113.65296

Turn right at the road and head South, back to the parking lot that is less than a mile down the road. This is the same exit whether or not you are making this canyon a loop route starting at the parking lot in Snow Canyon State Park or shuttling between Snow Canyon State Park and the Tuacahn Amphitheater.

4. Shuttle Times / Other:
Snow Canyon - Tuacahn Amphitheater Shuttle
12.5 mins
If you choose to do the Tuacahn Theater Approach, you will need to shuttle between Snow Canyon State Park and the parking lot at the Tuacahn Center For the Arts. Leave your exit vehicle in the parking lot North of the sand dunes in Snow Canyon State Park. The shuttle time is short but helps you avoid a lot more hiking.

Type of Rappel: Free Hanging
Rappel 6 Anchor
Two bolted hangers with chains on the wall of the canyon RDC.
Overview
This is the only rappel in the canyon that can hold a significant amount of water at the bottom but doesn't seem like it can hold more than something thigh deep. This is probably the most scenic rappel of the canyon and you go down a natural spring seeping out of the canyon wall.
Rappel 7

Rappel 8
Rappel 8 Anchor
Two bolted hangers with chains.
Overview
This final vertical rappel is a great way to end the canyon with a bang. Enjoy the open view of Snow Canyon State Park as you go down this 140 ft. rappel with a free-hanging section at the end. If you choose not to do this rappel, scramble up the saddle to the West of the rappel about 20 yards from the end of the slot. Work your way down the gulley and then follow the exit out.
Tips
Back up as far as you can to pull the rope so that rope grooves are minimized.
