Flash Flood Danger

This canyon has a modest flashflood potential. Make sure to check the weather forecasts during the time of your trip. The sky is easily visible on the approach, so you can use the sky as an indicator before you drop into the canyon. The only place to escape in the canyon is a bit after the first rappel, down-canyon-right, where you can scramble back up to the top. The escape is also the location of the first rappel bypass.

Sildeanide Canyon Rappels

0 - 5 rappels

Slideanide is a very unique canyon and gives canyoneers the chance to work on and enhance their downclimbing skills. Although most drops in the canyon can be downclimbed--with the exception of the first, optional rappel--Slideanide offers plenty of places to create an anchor if needed. Most anchor types in this canyon are chockstone anchors and slung boulders. Some small drops may require a meat anchor if you choose to rappel. Some drops may seem very intimidating but can be easily downclimbed. Use a spotter at the bottom of some of the shorter downclimbs for more security and assistance. This canyon feature sections where you can stem, perform elevator-style downclimbs, and even do some sliding! This is a great canyon that can be considered beginner if the larger drops are rappelled but considered more intermediate level if the large drops are downclimbed.

Rappel 1

Length: 60 ft

Type of Rappel: Optional

Coordinates: 38.101591, -110.520468

Rappel 1 AnchorAnchor Icon

Webbing slung from a boulder serves as the anchor for this rappel. You should courtesy rig for everyone in the group and then extend the webbing to the edge for the last person down.

Overview

Rappel down to the canyon floor directly from the pour-off in the watercourse. There is a short free-hanging section about 20 feet into the rappel that is enjoyable. After this rappel you will encounter some short downclimbs before reaching the next possible rappel.

Tips

This rappel is optional and can be bypassed by contouring around the east side of the canyon. Walk the rim along the east side until you can scramble down to the canyon bottom. If you have found that you have reached another canyon while contouring around the east rim, you have gone too far and have reached Constrychnine Canyon.

Rappel 2/Downclimb

Length: 15 ft

Type of Rappel: Optional

Rappel 2 AnchorAnchor Icon

For those who wish to rappel, webbing can be found or established on a chockstone just before the drop.

Overview

Rappel or downclimb about 15 ft. to the canyon floor again. This is a straightforward downclimb for the most part. It flares out a bit at the bottom, but using the crack to wedge your right foot makes it easy.

Tips

Having a spotter at the bottom for those downclimbing is helpful.

Rappel 4/Downlclimb

Length: 50 ft

Type of Rappel: Optional

More anchor information coming soon.

Overview

You will come to a large drop shortly after the 3rd rap/downclimb. Peering down the drop, you can see the bottom. Some may want to rappel this but it is a very doable elevator-style downclimb. This is one of the best downclimbs in the entire canyon and is great for those looking to practice their downclimbing skills. From the bottom of this rappel/downclimb, complete a few more short downclimbs before the canyon opens up again before the final section.

Sliding in Slideanide Canyon

Rappel 5/Downclimb

Length: 160 ft

Type of Rappel: Optional

Coordinates: 38.10523,-110.52359

Rappel 5 AnchorAnchor Icon

Recently there have been about 4 places throughout this last drop that you can anchor from and rappel. Webbing already exists at these spots and is easy to find. You can rappel about 30 or so feet from where the first anchor station is to another anchor directly in the watercourse. The second anchor is located directly underneath a large boulder wedged in-between the canyon walls. Another 20 feet passed the second anchor is more webbing wedged in a chockstone or alternately there is more webbing from rocks in the watercourse about 10 feet below the chockstone.

Overview

After the canyon opens up for a bit, it will slot up again. Stay in the watercourse to reach the last series of rappels or downclimbs. This is by far the best section of the canyon! The watercourse corkscrews a bit and makes rappelling pretty awkward. Alternatively, downclimbing can feel somewhat exposed and scary because it is pretty dark in this section. The slides/downclimbs in this section are very doable and may take some spotting from a partner, but are a blast!

Tips

Using a headlamp in this section can be beneficial.
